Jimmy's best role IMO

It's certainly the darkest and most morally ambiguous character Jimmy Stewart ever played. This main character absolutely does not ask for our sympathy and Stewart's performance doesn't ask us to like him or not, it's like a Robert Ryan role.

As Manny Farber said, "The character is deadly private and sort of bitter. Maybe not bitter, but it’s a kind of malevolent privacy where he doesn’t want to explain anything he does, and yet he understands everything that’s going on around him without actually taking part in it."

interesting... i have to agree, but then again -- compared to his other films -- he didn't have much to say or do, dud he?

so yes, he did mighty fine work as defined by the script, director, etc.
