Just realized something....

I have seen this film several times, and I just realized something last night when I was watching it again. At the end, does Cal's father really treat him nicely and say he wants him to stay with him because, 1) Having a stroke and being near death truly softened him and mellowed him out, and, 2) Because of Abra's speech about how horrible it is not to feel loved and he realizes how horrible he treated Cal all his life, or 3) Because he realizes he's old, sick, and alone, except for Cal, because the other brother took off to go to war and there's no one else to take care of him??

Yes.

(sorry)

As it comes Abra's speech, the movie wants audience think of a combination of 1) and 2).
But it may also can be a little bit of 3).
