Suitcase of money question

It seems that the bad guys might have known where the money might have been, since they had the telephone number to the thug who had the son. So why didn't they just go to that location in the city instead of calling over the phone? Dramatically it makes sense to have an out of the way location where the money will be delivered and all the shooting can take place, but there seems to be a lapse in logic. If the bad guys had the telephone number, why didn't they go in person to look for the money?

Because they wanted to make an exchange. Money for the son.

But the bad guys just wanted to get the money. They were ruthless, and I don't think a fair exchange was on the table.

This is what Tony said, but I don't believe they would have killed the child.
At the end the plot was getting out of control though, because they wanted to find an end. Two things: 1) Tony should have waited until Pierre left the house to shoot him. 2) Pierre had to make clear Tony is dead before he enters the car.
I was a bit disappointed how they filmed this shoot-out. I guess they did not have much time. But the final driving scene is classic.

My opinion on the final shoot-out was the opposite. I like that it wasn't exaggerated, or over-glorified, (like this remake with Al Pacino will doubtlessly be) because the shoot-out wasn't really what was important. Pierre didn't care about killing Tony, it wasn't about 'the final duel' for him, he just wanted the money and to get out away from the area as fast as possible. If it had been filmed any other way it would of been a cliche distraction, and I think the director realized this.

I'm confused. I thought the guy went to London and got all the jewels fenced so where did the jewels in the bag come from that the Italian guy hid in the lamp?

Great film, loved the ending!

No the deal regarding the amount of money for them was brokered in person in London by Jo. We don't see the jewels being handed over but given that Teddy the Greek arrives with their cash it seems fair to assume he had collected the jewels from Tony earlier.

Hi, just watch this movie. I think the final shoot-out is OK as it is not an important part. Remember the final shoot-out in High Noon, it is not good but the movie is still great. And it maybe is the way the Parisien bad guys do in 60's :-)

reply

It's been a year since I last watched the film, but as I recall the money was actually in transit between London and Paris, and the bad guys KNEW this since they had tortured the information out of two different guys. The grabbed the kid because they knew the money would EVENTUALLY land in the hands of the kid's dad. As to whether they would really have killed the kid, I think the director leaves no doubt - that kid was a dead boy.

reply

I’m not sure the kid was doomed—then why wasn’t he dead already?

Tony should have taken the cash, or at least his share, with him instead of leaving it with Jo.

the kid survived

I saw the film last night and I beieve the answer is this:

The hoods had already attempted to "go get the money (loot)" by grabbing Mario and his wife. The junkie brother made a mess of the hoods' plan by cutting Mario's and Mario's wife's throats.

The hoods left town assuming someone would find the two bodies and the cops might come looking for them. Given this, they needed someone to bring the loot (money) to them.

This also explains why they left Cesar tied up in the basement of the club. They had intended to go back and finish him once they got the loot, but they had to flee Paris because of the junkie brother's murderous actions.

Good post. The only true moment of stupidity was Pierre not finshing off Tony after shooting him, it juist wasn't believable. Excellent film still.

I think between chasing Tony around the villa and making a run for the car-- Pierre chose making a run for the car... but yeah, Pierre should have been more careful since he couldn't be sure Tony was dead.

The bad guys didn't know about the money until Jo told them the jewels had been sold, or 'fenced' according to the subtitles. Pierre and his guys were looking for jewels that were hidden. That's why they wanted them brought to them rather than searching apartment after apartment fruitlessly.
