'Escape' possibilities!

Spoilers Present.

What was the best time for the family to make an escape from their situation?

I thought it was when whathisname was alone with the family following the daughter's date, when Bogey went out to check on his big friend, "gotta stop that fool" ... and what happens, THEY DO TAKE ADVANTAGE AT THAT MOMENT. Wow, I was amazed as how the exact time I thought would be the family's chance to get out of it actually was taking place!
But then little Ralphie. Oh, they should have let them have him. Don't get me wrong, I didn't find the kid irritating as some others do because that's what an average kid was back in '55; sort of like a youthful James Dean.

I never think about the future, it comes soon enough

Speaking of escaping, I can't believe George didn't escape. That was sad. What a marvelous plot to jump, having to know the speed and upcoming road situation.

Yeah, I really thought he deserved to get away from Kobish!

When the mother and father and kid were alone in the upstairs bedroom, couldn't they have tied a few sheets together and escaped out the window? They'd be able to run to a neighboring house and call the police in time before the daughter got home. Two of the men were downstairs, the third was in a separate upstairs bedroom.
