Questions about plot, etc.

Spoilers Present.

Sorry if it seems I wasn't paying attention, but when Bogey tells the father he'd be gone by midnight, maybe sooner, why is that his estimate??

Also, why didn't they stick to this estimate - was it the call from Helen?

About an hour in, was that the Hotel Delancey??

'Spill My Guts'?

When big man calls for the father to come pick him up at the golf course, what does he mean by him spilling his guts if he's caught?

Also, after the father tells Chuck it's a private conversation, why does he look out the door towards his secretary?? Was it to check for the mail that came a second or two after?

reply

Who sent the letter? Man, I need to watch this again.

Why didn't Bogey's gun fire??

Bogie's girlfriend sent the letter, actually an envelope containing the money she was supposed to bring the night before. Only she got pulled over for speeding and ditched her car. The cops knew she was enroute and left instructions for her not to be stopped. Only an over-zealous traffic cop pulled her over. She then ditched the car and disappeared, calling Bogie at the Hilliards' to let him know she wasn't coming. He told her to mail the money.

reply

The father could have been looking out the door towards his secretary to check if the mail had arrived but to me it seemed he was making sure his secretary was not on the phone listening-in on his private conversation.

reply

I just watched it, and that's exactly it - he was making sure the secretary wasn't on the phone too.

When Kobish went after the garbage man, I thought this was odd. I know it looked like the garbage man possibly recognized the car and may have said something to someone when he left but for Kobish to run out after him in the driveway, jump on the back of the truck and then climb into the truck in broad daylight when there were clearly other people outside at the time (they were in view) was odd...don't you think someone would have seen that and said something? I recall someone in the neighbors yard - wouldn't you notice someone that size running and then jumping onto the back of a truck?

The big man meant that if Hilliard didn't come and get him and he ended up getting caught, he would tell the police where the Griffens were hiding. Remember, Griffen (Bogie) had threatened to shoot the family first should the police close in. Hilliard's first instinct was to protect his family.

It should be obvious why Hilliard looked out the door; to ensure that no one was eavesdropping. He knew his odd behavior was observed by his secretary and Chuck.

Speaking of looking, later he's talking to Griffin and looks upstairs and there's a noise, but I couldn't decipher what it was. The kid and wife Are upstairs at this point but I can't tell why the noise was made or what it was. He looks upstairs just for a sec. I had the closed captioning reveal nothing as if nothing was there but obviously there was. I'll have to assume one of the family member cried out something muffled but the father didn't jump and leave to see what it was, just look, which was odd. Perhaps he was too hooked with his talk near the base of the stairs with Griffin, but that's probably reading too much into it.

Oh I see.
Thanx.
But I still want to see it again.

1) They were waiting for the last envelope to come. They'd leave at night so it'd be easier to escape.

2) "Spilling your guts" means telling everything to somebody else, in this case the police (after an interrogation most likely).

3) Opened the door to make sure nobody was eavesdropping.

4) Bogey's gun didn't fire because Mr. Hilliard emptied the mag and chamber a minute or two earlier, when the cops gave him the gun.

5) The letters were being sent by his gf, according to what Bogey said earlier. Probably to make sure they wouldn't lose the money if the gf got caught, which after all, ended up happening when she missed a red light.

Cheers

The girlfriend, Helen, was pulled over for speeding while enroute to the Hilliards' home. She ditched the car and disappeared. She then called Bogie to let him know she couldn't bring the money because the cops were watching for her. He instructed her to mail it. Since it was already late at night, the envelope couldn't be mailed until the next morning. That's why Bogie's estimate of the time when they'd be gone changed.

reply

He estimates midnight because that's how long it will take his girlfriend to reach them.

They didn't stick to it because she got pulled over for running a red light and never made it.
