Hey Flutch, how's this for irony: Meeker's nickname is "Le Marteau"-the hammer. And Meeker JUST finished starring as 'Mike Hammer' in Mickey Spillane's "Kiss Me Deadly".

Also, right around this time, Ralph Meeker starred in the first episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. His co-star was Vera Miles ... who was married to Keith Larsen (El Zanal) from 1960-1971. It's a small Hollywood.

I only paid marginal attention to the film; I thought it would be a gritty 'Algerian War' type Foreign Legion film like 'Lost Command' or 'Commando' (The Stewart Granger film not Arnie's) than a cross between 'Beau Geste' & 'Flame of Araby'.
