Question...

...in the trivia section it mentions that Fred Astaire personally requested to work with Leslie Caron. She's an amazing actress/performer, but does anyone know what reason he offered beyond that? Thanks for your time!

reply

I've never read of a specific reason, but Astaire tended to enjoy working with highly trained dancers, and Caron definitely was one.

This is pure speculation, but perhaps Astaire was also interested in Caron as a partner because of her height of just over 5'1". I once read that Mitzi Gaynor was considered for the role of Julie. She was the same height as Cyd Charisse (5'6"), and he had worried about appearing short beside Cyd (he was about 5'9", but his partners had a tendency to wear high heels--or even go up en pointe!). In fact, Comden and Green wrote this into the script of "The Band Wagon"--Tony Hunter keeps fretting that Gabrielle (Cyd Charisse) is too tall for him.

Anyway, Leslie Caron wasn't approaching his height even up on her toes, so that may have played a part in her appeal to him.

Fred was only 5'9"? Not a very long-legged Daddy Long Legs! But wow, he sure looks tall in his movies. And at least he's got half an inch on Sylvester Stallone. Two inches on Tom Cruise. Hollywood is just a land of little munchkins.

I hope it's not been too long since you posted your question about DADDY LONG LEGS .....

Leslie Caron had been hand-picked by Gene Kelly to come to Hollywood and film AN AMERICAN IN PARIS. She was in the French ballet and had done something or took some picture as a "cat." So Kelly was told about the "cat" woman. When he saw her, realized her manificent ballet skills, it was a done deal. But Caron herself did not want to make movies or go to Hollywood. It was Caron's mother who persuaded her to do so.

Once Caraon made such a huge impact in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS with Kelly (1951) at the same studio (MGM) as Astaire, I suppose Astaire couldn't wait to work with her. But there's another reason Astaire and Caron made the picture: the part of Julie Andre had to be a girl of about 18. That let out Cyd Charisse who would have been most likely. The other MGM female dancers: Jane Powell, Debbie Reynolds, Ann Miller would have never fit the bill. Caron just fulfilled all the requirements. And who else was French?

He's got an inch on Humphrey Bogart and two on Al Pacino.

The funny thing is, I always thought he looked short, but I started out watching his movies with Ginger and the supporting cast such as Randolph Scott and Edward Everett Horton were so much taller than him. Even Jack Buchanan in the Band Wagon was taller than him. But he does look very tall in Daddy Long Legs because Leslie Caron is so short. And then he looks short again in the scenes with Fred Clarke.

I never paid much attention to Astaire's height--or lack of it. But I think Jack Buchanon in BAND WAGON was a bit tall, wasn't he?

Fred Clarke was HARRY MORTON on BURNS AND ALLEN for years before he was replaced by LARRY KEATING in that role. Ironically, both were in DADDY LONG LEGS. But Clark was a big guy and I think much bigger in his early career, then lost weight.

Astaire was just so slim that I think it might haven given off the appearance that he was not tall.

I think you are right that Astaire's reediness helped him seem taller. (And remember that the children's impression that he seemed like a daddy long legs came from seeing his shadow cast long upon a wall.) But FA did have some very tall co-stars; Randolph Scott, for example, was by many accounts 6'3"!

Fred was too secure to worry about that, but he did seem to like being taller than his female partners. He barely manages this with Ann Miller, who was very nearly 5'9" herself, but it certainly doesn't bother me. He still always seems commanding, and never strikes me as a small guy.

I most of his pictures with Ginger he struck me as a small guy because of his tall co-stars (but I always thought that was really cute xD). However, in the 50's he never struck me as a small guy even next to Jack Buchanan. I don't know why. Maybe because he wasn't as young.
