In spite of this film's obvious flaws, of having Hollywood stars playing American Indians, worst of all a very mature Victor Mature portraying the 33-year-old Lakota medicine Chief Crazy Horse (Tashunka Witko), and a white actress (the very late Suzan Ball) as his wife, Black Shawl, I found myself enjoying this cheaply made western. Of course, the climactic battle with Custer at the Little Big Horn is not played or shown with historical accuracy, for that would have cost a lot more money than the budget on this picture.
What is interesting is the film is told from a Lakota Sioux native point of view instead of the usual whites-vs.-Indians narrative story device.
This movie shows why they just don't make pictures like this one any more. There is of course, the "Instant Hollywood Indian Kit" (costume, wig and makeup, and dialog imitating Jay Silverheels as Tonto in The Lone Ranger) used by many actors in the film, and real native Americans in the background who become distracting because they are playing it realistically behind the Hollywood actors, stage settings and props.
So Universal, where is the DVD?
