'Heat' Inspiration

I wonder if the scene where Commissaire Ledru is talking to Bob is the inspiration for the scene from Heat when Pacino and DeNiro is sitting in the diner.

Good point, nine-one. Absolutely. Michael Mann is as derivative a filmmaker as Scorcese. It's not plagiarism, though. All of the great artists, painters, filmakers, musicians, etc. use their past experiences and what they've gleaned from their education to produce new works that pay homage to those that have gone before them. Even Vermeer used an "opaque projector" to trace figures that he than proceeded to render into great works of art. Even totally original artists have to go into their memories and previous experiences gathered from reading, viewing, listening to their predecessors in order to sculpt new interpretations of their "art". I used to feel terribly ashamed of my "copying" previously drawn pictures or previously performed music, until I came to grips with the understanding that that's not only the best way to go, but virtually the only way to go.

According to Mann himself, one of Michael Mann's influences is Melville.

A great example of that is in Le Samurai --> Neil McCauley in Heat. Even Le Cercle Rouge.

"According to Mann himself, one of Michael Mann`s influences is Melville".

No sh-t. I mean, is there a later age crime movie director that `isn`t` influenced by Melville?

I made that same comparison when I watched this. Both scenes are similar in that both cop and criminal respect each other and both know what the other one is about to do, but they still do it, as if doing it is inevitable. The scene in Heat is much more elaborate, of course, but the spirit is the same.

no, the scene was inspired by a real confrontation between a detective and a real neil mccully. mann is a notoriously meticulous film maker, makes sure that everything is not only believable, but also accurate, such as representation of sciopathic robbers and energetic cops, who have to deal and work with people who often times work against them whether on purpose or not
