Value of francs at the time?

anyone have an idea how much, say, 200,000 francs would be worth. it seemed to be a reasonable amount of money, but one which Bob was more than happy to chuck on a game of craps.

so therefore how much would 800million be?

just watched the film and loved it! getting into melville's films at the moment after enjoying Army of Shadows and Le Samourai. next i'll watch Les Enfants terribles and Le Silence de la Mer

I was wondering also, so I tried finding a value. Approximate exchange rate in 1956 was 400/1 francs per U.S. Dollar. So raw value of 200,000 francs would be about $500 and 800 million francs would convert to about $2 million dollars.

However, the 1956 dollar was worth considerably more than today's dollar. So converting value including adjustments for inflation would put 200,000 francs worth about $ 3,000 - $ 4,000 in today's money and 800 million francs would be worth about $12 - $16 million dollars in today's money.
