Fate, fortune and the flip of a coin (slight spoilers)

From the outset of the film things are set up in versus. From the setting being the hours between night and day. Montmartre as heaven and hell. The char lady who is late for work versus the young girl advanced for her age. The Heads or Tails restaurant of which Yvonne is the proprietoress. Bob's flip of the coin and the call of the dice or the cards. Bob saving Ledru's life and the either/or reason for this action. And so on. At the end Bob gives into the gambler he is by nature versus the armed robber. I liked the way life in the film is stacked as cards that might fall in one direction or another. The either/or is broken in the final moments when, debating with the police following his arrest, Bob finds a third alternative solution to his plight.
