Same here. He shook him against the board the way an angry pansie might, not like a guy exacting a bit of revenge for all the crap he pulled.

Well it was 1955, but teachers still couldn't get away with decking a minor even then. Slapping or using big paddles on the back side was ok within reason, but you couldn't knock them down with a punch. In the alley that would have been different because it was away from school and self defense. I guess he could have done more when defending against the knife, but not once the knife was dropped...

Actually Louis Calhern's character was reprimanded for slapping one of his students. It was very brief and quick, just before Dadier got called him for his "racist" remarks. But it happened. The man grumbled about the verbal backlash, but he's lucky that that's *all* that happened to him.
