Method Actors

Palance, Steiger, and Winters were doing some monumental Method scenery chewing here. All the movie needed was James Dean to roll around on the floor in a fetal position crying. The pre-method actors were more realistic.

And Monty Clift all hunched over, rocking back and forth in anguish.

I'm surprised the set wasn't reduced to a bunch of giant toothpicks with all the chewing going on.

I watched this for the terrific cast but they were all at their worst here. Even the marvelous Jean Hagen was terrible.

The only thing I'd say about Jean Hagen is that I DID want to beat her to a pulp - therefore her actng can't have been that bad? ;-)

LOL Thank you, thank you all, very much. I haven't laughed as hard in the last three years. You also managed to highlight the best and worst aspects of "The Method."

Palance, Steiger, Winters.

My favorite critique of Method Acting came from Laurence Olivier. While watching Dustin Hoffman stay up for over a day, getting himself into a frazzle so he could play hit terrorized character in "Marathon Man," Olivier responded by offering a much simpler solution: "It's called acting, my dear boy."
