gay overtones?

the opening scenes, with the rubdown, and the boxing.....was there more to that than meets the eye?

I suspected as much in the scene when Wendell Corey asks Jack Palance how he feels about women.

Anyone interested in checking out the cover scan for the extremely rare promotional recording from 1955, click miscellaneous on the main page for "The Big Knife", then soundtrackcollector and that'll take you right to it.

And Stanley Hoff (Rod Steiger) hand lingers just a little too long on the material of Charlie's (Palance) robe.

most definately gay overtones. unmistakable.

reply

I'm usually dubious of the gay angle in many IMDB threads (e.g., Danny Kaye's and Bing Crosby's characters in "White Christmas"--give me a break), but I've got to admit there's probably something to this this line of thinking regarding "The Big Knife".

Not with that Mid-Century Modern decor gone terribly wrong!

So what? They were sparring and then he gave him a rubdown. That's what trainer's do.
If a doctor grabs a guys nuts and has him cough, is the doctor necessarily gay?

Geeze, there is wayyyyy to much gay subtexts on people's minds today.

reply

No, but if the doctor grabs the guy's nuts, makes reference to 'playing ball', fantasises about the two of them visiting 8th Avenue together and whispers tenderly in his ear, it might possibly be seen as suggestive.

Wayyyyy to much denial of gay subtexts today.

reply

No, not intentionally gay overtones, not in the mid 50's. But, undertones have always been in film, it's part of life, especially Hollywood and theater life.

I definitely got gay vibes b/Charlie and the trainer when Charlie was freaking out about Stanley coming and the trainer grabs him in a hug, whispers something intimately in his ear and immediately calms him down. Plus like someone else posted, what seemed like almost worship of Charlie from him.

When Stanley arrived, like someone else mentioned, his hand lingered a little long as he carressed Charlie's back "feeling the material of the robe" AAAANNNNDDDD then.....he slaps him on the butt like WTF?! :O

And why on earth does the manager keep referring to Charlie as "darling" after Stanley leaved from forcing him to sign the contract. I'm watching it now and kept rewinding to make sure he wasn't saying "Charles" and he was DEFINITELY saying "darling".

reply

I have a feeling the trainer said something along the lines of: don't listen to him and/or; did you want me to stop this? Sorry to burst your hot n' heavy button.

reply

Oh... the rubdown and the boxing. Yup, must be gay!
