Few words...

I just saw Il bidone (The Swindle), the film may be a bit overlong but Broderick Crawford carries it with a fine performance all the way to the very end. He really does win you over despite being an old loser who doubles as a Catholic priest to extort people and take their money. The New Year's Eve party scene is really quite good, and the addition of the daughter to the plot adds weight to the story and is played out very well. Masina doesn't have much to do here but I love that face of hers! And those old streets of Italy's cities, the piazzas that seem to show in every Fellini film. I love one quote that says something about man deserving to rest while he's alive, it kind of encapsulates what I take to be a side of Fellini in some way. Very sad ending but nothing compared to La Strada.

"Very sad ending but nothing compared to La Strada." or Nights of Cabiria for that matter.

*SPOILER ALERT for Nights of Cabiria*

I felt like I didn't like this one as much as the other Fellini works I've seen. But I just saw this moments ago and think it wasn't the film I didn't like, but the characters (not including Picasso so much, the other two though...) They're so objectionable, amoral, and just down right bastards. They're even worse than Oscar in Nights of Cabiria, and Zampano in La Strada. So I don't know where this sits for me. I don't feel like I enjoyed it, but if that was caused by the horrible characters that must mean the film was quite powerful to create that kind of effect over me.

You make my feelings confused Fellini, damn you!

*SPOILERS*

Okay, seconds later I realise that somehow I completely spaced out on the fact that Augusto tried to scam his colleagues (or as he vainly tries to put it, "friends") for his daughters schooling, haha, I'm such a cretin. That sorta changes everything. I thought he might give the money back when he spoke with the cripple girl because he felt empathy for her because of his own daughter... then thought he was absolute scum when not only did he not give the $ back, but he also couldn't even do right by his colleagues. Well yea the ending is pretty damn sad I guess.

Him and Roberto are still complete jackass's, Augusto just gets a bit more sympathy in the end.

I admire Fellini's work greatly and consider 'La Strada' and 'Nights of Cabiria' among the best films of all time. This one, in my opinion, doesn't measure up to those. It is not without its charms, however. The characterizations are good and the locations are interesting, the desperate situation that Augusto works himself into leaves no real doubt as to how he's going to end up. Still, have to give credit where due, it is a much better film than most others out there, it just falls short of his best works.

Well you can’t hit a home run every time you come up to the plate. There are some parts of this movie where Fellini genius does show. The party is one of them and near the end with the crippled girl made my jaw drop. I could actually feel Augusto’s pain.
