Portrait of Loneliness???

Many people refer to Fellini's early trilogy of movies which have been labelled his "Portraits of Loneliness".

'La Strada' and, to a lesser extent, 'Nights of Cabiria' have loneliness as a central theme but I find it hard to make an argument that 'Il Bidone' is a portrait of loneliness.

Is it being grouped with the other movies to satisfy peoples love of trilogies? Is it for marketing purposes ie. there might be a box set coming out containing the three movies?

Whatever the case may be, it appears to be inaccurate and disingenuous.

I can see why people would consider these three films as a trilogy because they have some similarities. All star Giulietta Masina and two of them feature Richard Basehart.

All three deal with irony (if that's the accurate word); Zampano' breaks chains for a living yet keeps Gelsomina chained to himself, Augusto swindles others for a living and gets fùcked over by his associates in the end, Cabiria pleasures men for a living yet can't please herself and her own needs.

And yes, I'd say all three deal with loneliness in a certain way. Zampano', Augusto and Cabiria are all potrayed to be pretty lonely IIRC.
