How good is Robert Ryan in everything he does?

He's my favorite actor. I own somewhere between 40 and 50 of his films.

Ryan was superb in the roles he chose. But he was less effective in the few films that required a lighter touch--romantic leads and comedy. Cagney and Bogart, among others, could.
