Better than its rating

The movie is better than its current rating (6.6/10).
Like the hero, we plead for 'forgiveness' all the time, we should forgive the director that he was never able to make up his mind, on what he actually wanted to produce. A comedy? A tragedy? A documentary?
So the movie wobbles through space and time, and is funny, and thoughtful, and overall it shows a remarkable history of an 'adaptable' person, who does whatever he thinks is going to advance him with money and women.
There are not too many movies dealing with this subject, and this is a good one, except that the director tries a 'one size fits all' and rushes through the story; ending well before he has set his mind on which version he actually prefers.
It is not funny enough to be a comedy, and it is too light to make the viewer reflect his own position of 'How far would I compromise to achieve this and that?'
And so we walk from it, not knowing what to take home.
