Ages of Cary and Ron?

Did they tell the actual age difference in the film? Was Ron the age of her son? or just a couple years younger?

reply

I think Ron was older than Cary's children.....such a beautiful movie.

reply

I would venture a guess and say Cary was in her very early 40's. While Ron was in his very early 30's. Ron would be able to relate to Cary's son on some level.

I'd guess... 41 and 27. He was older than her son, but not by that much.

I'd say Ron was in his mid-thirties and Cary in her early to mid-forties. It wasn't so much the age difference as it was Ron's social status that was the "problem."

The son is still in college so he is no older than 20-21 likely and Ron is probably mid to late 20's. Carrie is late 30's, almost forty (the movie mentions she was married at seventeen). She's only approximately 10 years older than Ron. Notice the age difference is only briefly addressed as it's not that huge of a difference and there have always been women who were somewhat older than their husbands even in the early 20th century. I'm guessing the age difference is large enough to cause comment but not large enough for it to be a "scandal" and make him seem like her boy toy.

I think the whole point of the film is that no one should look at age difference if the couple seems well adjusted and happy. To me, what is scandalous is when a couple are right for each other and so-called friends or relatives call the younger man the older woman's "boy toy". What should be looked at is how they treat each other and if they do have some things in common.

The real-life ages of the actors: Jane Wyman was 38 in 1955, and Rock Hudson was 30.

The Criterion DVD includes a bonus feature where it is stated that the characters are 15 years apart in age. However, that is not mentioned in the film.

I would have put them both a good ten years older than their actual ages just going off how they looked in the final scene. They didn't look like there was much of an age gap either.

The guy who the kids wanted her to date looked about 20 years older than her too, but of course that would have been okay. *rolls eyes*

How times have changed, eh? I am the same age as she was then, but put us side by side and she would look like my mother!

I read the book awhile ago and it says that Cary is 42 when they meet and Ron 35 years old.
While I thought of Ron being that age in the movie, Cary seemed older to me, I guess it was her hairstyle.

I'm so glad you posted this. I've wondered at their ages. Jane Wyman ALWAYS looks so much older than she really is, in every movie, but her skin sure is beautiful. I also enjoyed she and Rock Hudson in Magnificent Obsession. I'm a sucker for glossy, slick Hollywood flicks. ;-)

Claudette Colbert and Jane Wyman both were good actresses and had beautiful faces, but extremely ugly hair-dos. The only time I liked Colbert's looks was in "Cleopatra" which proved to me that longer hair would have suited her so much better, but maybe her hair was too thin.
Jane Wyman had longer hair in "Johnny Belinda" and looked better, too, even though it was a very challenging role.

reply

Waldenpond88, you are so right about that! I love both actresses, they're favourites of mine but their hair-dos were so horrible...
I liked Jane's hair-do in Johnny Belinda, The Yearling & The Lost Weekend (and in some of her earlier roles, like Princess O'Rourke), but her 50s hairstyle, God, she looked so much older with it!
Claudette actually had a better one in more movies, like in It Happened One Night or in The Palm Beach Story and some other roles of the 30s.

Jane and Rock were only 8 years apart. Closer than I thought.

reply

If you think that Jane Wyman always looked older than her actual age, then you clearly haven't seen all, or many, of her movies.

Her birth year has been listed as 1912, 1914 and 1917. I doubt 1917 is true--she'd have been married 3 times by the age of 23 if it were true. So, if we go with the middle date, that would make her 11 years older than Rock Hudson. With her look and station in life here, that gap would have been significant. She would have been solidly middle-aged for the time period--he still young. It was reason enough for her social circle to heartily feel the need to disapprove of the match.

Did you watch the movie?

Internet Movie Database say that Jane and Rock had a nine year age difference and Jane as playing the older woman, so I think this was saying that the age difference between the characters were more than nine years apart. I'm guessing at least a 13-15 age difference since Ron was slightly older than Cary's son. I think the age difference between Cary and her children was 20 years. But I think the point of this movie is that you should not object to an age difference if the younger person is mature, knows what they are getting into by being romantically interested in someone older.
