Simulating Autumn

This movie is praised for its simulation of a New England autumn -- a real accomplishment considering it was shot on a Universal City backlot in the dead of winter. It's possible that some of the colors are real as certain cultivars, most notably of Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), are specially bred to color well in warm climates and hold their leaves late. But I wouldn't be surprised if the trees were artificial, or spray-painted.

I'm sure it was all art. I lived in Massachusetts for 30-odd years, and found the visual depiction of autumn pleasing but artificial. It was like a beautifully dressed store window or a museum diorama.

The 're-imagining/re-make' of this movie, Far from Heaven (2002), was filmed in October in NJ/CT, and was so beautiful to look at. Definitely worth watching, with Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, and Patricia Clarkson in lead roles.
