What kind of breathing apparatus did they use?

When they bail out or send someone outside the sub, they put on what looked like a lifejacket but with a scuba type mouthpiece. It didn't seem to have any kind of compressed air supply however. Was it simply a bag of air under light pressure that would give them enough supply to surface in about 100' of water?
