Gambling Theme Overused

I truly wish they did not have most shows about gambling. I think the show missed many other episode topics that would have been stimulating to its viewer. Good show, but could have been better.

Greatornot, I have a question.

But first, I wish to point out that your point would be better taken if you didn't exaggerate so much. Not much more than 20% of the plots were about gambling, call it 25% to be generous. But you wrote "most shows" were about gambling. Just not so.

Moving on, it is impossible to argue against the claim that the show could have been better. The question is, how, in your opinion, could it have been better?

You say they missed topics that would have been good--but you fail to tell us what topics you are thinking of. At this point it is impossible to say if I think you are right or wrong on that general point.

If you respond by listing, say, four topics you think would have been better to focus on, I can guarantee one thing: At least a few IMDB posters will, honestly, write back that they don't like one or more of your suggestions.

I'm not saying they won't be any good. Simply stating that whatever topics you suggest will appeal to some folks and not to others.

Me, I'm neutral. The topics may or may not have made for better shows. It depends on what the writers did with them.

I think a great episode would have been Bilko having an affair with the Colonels wife. They could have made that a 2 parter..

I hear they're remaking "The Incredible Hulk". Apparently, he turns into the hulk in every single episode. Surely they could have explored episode topics other than his hulkness.

I used to have this poll on my site, as you will see, they weren't all about gambling.

What the OP might have said accurately is that most, if not all, of the episodes involved money making schemes.

I just got all four seasons from Amazon.com on DVD and in season four the gambling theme got downright stupid in the episode "Bilko in Outer Space". He suckers Sgt. Ritzik and Sgt. Grover into a space simulator and he gets them into a poker game where they lose $600 they had saved to go to Hawaii . Col Hall makes Bilko give the money back. ----- But what makes it so stupid, all Ritzik and Grover had to do is say no to Bilko and that would be all. ------ But don't get me wrong "The Phil Silvers Show" is a classic. I've loved the show for just about sixty years.😎 ----- Rusty

First off, back in the mid 50's there wasn't a whole lot to do, especially in your downtime if you were in the military. Card playing and gambling was very common back then. My dad used to tell us that it was so boring, his service buddies would bet on just about anything, even two flies on the hood of a jeep and betting on which one would take off first.

Second, Phil Silvers was a prolific gamblers himself. If you watch the "making of" video on the "Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" DVD, they say that Phil ran poker and crap games in his trailer all the time.

i know what you mean ..car 54 was a little better than bilko but both are very funny..my favorite car 54 episodes were put it in the bank..next one was wally cox playing a pick pocket at yankee stadium, & molly pican playing an old lady who doesnt want to move out of her tenement..howard freeman, john alexander, & charles nelso reilly were hilarious in their roles

Car 54 was better because the episodes were less predictable. With Bilko, too many episodes where he had a moneymaking scheme, it worked, and he went soft at the end. BTW, Charles Nelson Reilly was in the later Molly Picon episode where she moves into her new apartment while the building is still under construction. But he was hilarious.
