I was 2 years old when this show was on TV. I dunno how I rememeber it. I have always loved Basset Hounds and have owned them. I have one now. Was there a Bassset Hound on that show?? Did it talk?? Thanks~~~~~~~Jody

No, I believe you are thinking of THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE.

Did Ann Sothern provide Cleo's voice? (I know she did for "My Mother the Car' - but it's best to keep quiet about that.) Did Cleo actually have a voice?

reply

halhorn is right; The People's Choice had a basset named, I think, Cleo, who used to talk to the audience.

Dick Wesson who played Schultzy's would-be boyfriend, Frank Crenshaw, on The Bob Cummings Show/Love That Bob! co-starred as Rollo with Jackie Cooper in the TV comedy The People's Choice.

Man, you've aged yerself hugely. Say, do you know anathin' aboot Bob Cummings ancient series where his name was Beanblossom? You'd be the expert on that I'd think.

After watching him in The Bob Cummings Show/Love That Bob! it was a treat to watch his follow up show The Bob Cummings Show aka The NEW Bob Cummings Show in 1961-62.

I'm an old timer, I guess. But, no, I have never seen an episode of My Hero starring Bob as Mr. Beanblossom. In fact, that was broadcast (for only a season) in 1952 --- the year I was born! (Bad reception )

Very funny.

So, might that mean that your were on a first name basis with Mr. Beanblossom?

reply

Not quite, but I was about 4 when Bean premiered. I never knew there were awful dvds available of the show and I do remember Cleo the Bassette from the People's Choice. Say, what did that title refer to? A Choice of what? I bet ye have fond memories of the first Betty White Show as well.

I believe I became aware of Betty White only after she and game show host Allen Luden got hitched back in the 60's. Later, I was surprised to see her turn up on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Until then I did not even know she was an actress.

As I recall, it was called The People's Choice because Sock (or Soc), played by star Jackie Cooper, worked for the Mayor. Sock was also courting Mandy, His Honor's daughter.

I'll have to look around for the My Hero DVD's you mention. I should like to see them. Bob Cummings only ever had one character -- Bob Cummings! -- but he was always good in his roles, even that The Twilight Zone episode.

reply

The Peoples Choice referred to the classic American idea that an elected official would be the 'peoples' choice. Also, the mayor's, and his daughter's, last name was Peoples. When the show started, Jackie Cooper was a local game warden. In a later season, he was elected mayor. As a little kid, I LOVED Cleo, and watched the show waiting for her to talk to the audience. Although, I seldom understood what she was commenting on.

You're not missing much. It's on Netflix streaming now, I watched an episode, and I'll tell you this much---LOVE THAT BOB is, by far, the better show, from what I can tell. I DID NOT LIKE "My Hero"!

LOVE THAT BOB spoiled me, so I had the same high expectations for MY HERO, but alas... no wonder it only lasted one season!

Thanks for that, MyMovieRomance.

Well, if it had not been for My Hero, there may not have been the Love That Bob! Format. So, it served its purpose, eh?

This thread was the first time we communicated. It's been 3 years now.

Apart from the known and the unknown, what else is there?

Very true. As much as I love LTB though, I have to admit that it frustrates me too, because it was one of those shows with SO MUCH POTENTIAL! you know? You know how sometimes, as a fan, you might be watching a show and love it but get mad at the direction the story took and suddenly, you wish you were in-charge of the show, to fix it? Well, this is one of those shows, to me.

I just get mad about where the writers decided to lay their focus a lot of the time. For example, I didn't care for the Grandpa character and found him annoying most of the time, yet, he seems to be in a lot of episodes---too many for my liking, anyway. By contrast, I think the Pamela Livingstone character and her hopeless pursuit of Bob is the funniest situation I've ever seen---EVER! in a sitcom. Yet, she was not used nearly enough for my liking. And, I guess it's because I get such a big kick out of her on the show that I get so mad that the writers incorporated the character of Pamela into the show so infrequently. I typed at length about it, at the link below.

I really feel that the writers missed out, not using her more.

Thanks for your thoughts.

When I was a lad, I was also annoyed by Grandpa, as he always seemed to make life difficult. I suspect that Cummings himself liked the character and he liked getting into that role. Remember how the story went about Ed Sullivan, how he was usually stiff, but enjoyed getting into circus clown garb and make-up because he felt he could cut loose. Maybe Bob felt the same way about getting gussied up as Old Grandpa Collins.

As some other poster had pointed out, this show. Was pretty racy for its time. I'm sure it might have gone in the directions you describe if it was made later in the 60's.
