1966 Christmas Eve Show

PBS just ran one of my favorite episodes the 1966 Christmas Eve show that features not only the cast but also their families. It's so obvious that when this show did live singing they were so uncomfortable with the mic, people are always holding it near someone to be close enough. I guess the studio was not even equipped with bool mics since almost always the vocal tracks were prerecorded.

I have to say as always the Lennon Sisters steal the show. Their siblings were just as talented and good looking as the four sisters were.

The opening number "Jingle Bells" is lip-synched.

What I cannot get over is how much Joanne Castle with her bouffant hairdo, fur coat and 1966-makeup job looks just like a hooker.

Entering arm-in-arm with the much-older Lawrence Welk doesn't help things.

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

I love her though she never fails to make me smile

Robert, I particularly loved the Christmas and Thanksgiving shows! Joann Castle was always a delight. Thank you for the sadly sweet trip down memory lane.

Don't enjoy the old Welk Christmas shows as much as I enjoy the old Andy Williams Christmas shows, where you see Claudine Longet with the family around the ol' hearthside. I wonder if one year she found a gun in her Christmas stocking.

The Welk Christmas specials would have been more interesting in retrospect if, say, Larry Hooper had later gone on a killing spree.
