I think this is another example of Welk trying to "spread out" and reach parts of every demographic -- rather than staying with the "big band" sound.
Personally, I hate country/western and hated those hicks he had working for him. I think they cheapened the show.

I love Country Music, and its called a variety show for a reason. Its funny, but the Country numbers probably made the show appeal to wider audiences. The other music was really really corny. Almost laughable.
