If you were rebooting Gunsmoke today

who would you cast for Matt Dillon? I like Steven Seagal (after some serious dieting). He has the quiet and imposing physical presence that James Arness had, and could wipe out a bar full of drunken cowboys easily without even needing his gun. Especially since his fighting style works best when people rush him.

reply

It would have to be an unknown actor so there can be no preconceptions about what they'll do.

reply

Joe Manganiello. He's got the looks and height. Also Jason Momoa as my second choice. I'd want it to be gritty and serious with just a bit of comedy, like the original.

But knowing how Hollywood rolls, they'll make it a straight up comedy with The Rock or maybe Vince Vaughn or something. I'd definitely not watch that.

reply

All good choices. Even The Rock would be ok .

Vaughn is tall enough but doughy and I think it would veer too much into comedy territory with him in the role. Best leave the laugh lines to whoever plays Festus.

reply

The Rock is too saturated now. He's in everything. I'd definitely pass on that. But I'm sure tons would go to see him.

reply

I can't believe this show hasn't been rebooted.

If I was running CBS, I would bring this show back ASAP.

So glad Moonves is gone.

When was the last time Network television even had a Western?

reply

They have their All Access subscription channel to fill now, so maybe it will happen.

I can't remember the last network western series. I was going to say "The Young Riders" but that was 30 years ago already. There had to be something after that.

reply

LOL...I don't think there is.

As far as The Big Three, I think Walker was the last one. More recently, AMC had Hell on Wheels, which was excellent!! I definitely wouldn't mind a movie or a reboot of Gunsmoke.

reply

Kung Fu cowboys! I always admired how Walker and his posse managed to keep those cowboy hats on while executing all of those fancy kicks and other martial arts moves.

reply

Hey don't knock it...the series is coming back.

reply

I didn't know. That's good news. The theme song was goofy, but other than that I enjoyed Walker quite a bit.

reply

Well I never saw it. Just remember the Late Night with Conan O'Brien bits.

But Walker was modern. I think the last real Western on The Big Three was Dr. Quinn.

reply

Actually, you know what? I think that's it.

And that's a good observation, kudo's!

I think that was a top 20 show as well.

reply

You could also include The Adventures of Brisco County Jr from 1993 on FOX.

reply

Yeah, you can. But it had Sci-Fi elements to it.

reply

But still, "Brisco" was a western.

reply

And ScarJo for Miss Kitty. 😊

reply

I like it!

reply

Nobody could come close to Arness, Weaver, Blake, Stone, or Curtis.
