These boards are closing

I'm going to miss the IMDB boards. I've never done facebook, but I enjoyed coming to sites like this and seeing what other folks have to say about their favorite shows and films. I'll miss all you guys and gals.

I'm not a woman much less Deanna Durbin, but the old-time glam-shot appeals to me.

A tragedy. Such a useful resource to tv and movie fans being flushed down the drain. A lot of great movies and shows are going to slip further into obscurity now.

reply

To be clear, the site isn't closing, just comments board(s).

why close the message boards?
it doesn't make any sense?
It's not as if it's bothering any one?

There is a fairly detailed explanation, but I guess they figure they don't have to spend money keeping this up when people can go to Facebook, etc. Idk, I like this.

The real reason is they get little to no revenue from the message boards. It's all about money.

That an it takes up a lot of space. All these messages have really added up over the years, I imagine. Which is why they're not just closing the board--they're deleting all the messages too!  (It would have been nice if you could search them for reference.) And they don't want to have to maintain and monitor. Still it's also going to make me and a lot of other people come here less often--because we won't have a reason to.

Nobody cares what Joe Public has to say. And screw facebook... I can't imagine they'd have message breakdowm at the movie/tv series...and even episode level.

Anyway, no way would I support that liberal idiot Mark Zuckerberg.

reply

I wonder if they would allow someone else to take over the system? The software here is archaic and difficult to maintain. One of their pioneer programmers, muzzle, hasn't been active for over two years. He used to help a lot, but I believe he became frustrated because any attempt to improve the board system inevitably led to more things being broken than fixed. It would be nice if the board system were replaced by a third party system like Disqus. Migrating would be difficult and cost prohibitive for IMDb.

They pretty much sum up the reasons in this article:

I don't think this has been a problem for Gunsmoke but is a problem in general. Also, there are many other sites(like Yahoo) that have cut back on message boards for similar reasons.

I will miss all the interesting discussions I had with people here. I learned how to look at things from different angles in story lines from you guys.

Farewell and adieu to you sweet Spanish ladies.

Yes, I've run into a couple times when people say some hateful political things and I've taken the bait and it gets pretty ugly. I don't think I even want to go the site mentioned in your link, I would really hate to imagine where that might go. But closing all the comments doesn't seem to accomplish anything. I would still think there are more genuinely thoughtful people here than there are trolls, but it feels like they are just pushing the problem somewhere else.

Agreed. Wonderful place to find answers on some of the old shows and finding out you're not the only one who remembers a obscure episode or series. I will miss this also.
