Best Western series ever, your fave?

For me, it's Cheyenne. Then, Bonanza and Gunsmoke.

CHEYENNE
The Texan (Rory Calhourn)
Bonanza
Wanted Dead Or Alive (Steve McQueen)
The Big Valley

Maverick
Cheyenne
Daniel Boone (early years)
The Macahans

Have Gun Will Travel--iconic character, everything fit into a neat 25 minute package. But the main plus, not often mentioned, shooting on location.

Plenty of choices. I limited it to my top five:

Have Gun, Will Travel
Maverick
Lawman (which followed Maverick every Sunday)
Cheyenne
Gunsmoke

reply

1 Cheyenne
2 Laramie
3 Bronco
4 Wagon Train

reply

Wanted Dead or Alive. Steve McQueen as Josh Randall. Way too cool.

reply

Yied between Have Gun, Will Travel/Lawman/Branded

1 Bonanza A huge body of work that had it all
2 Gunsmoke Gotta love the Marshall
3 Rawhide Young Clint Eastwood, and other regulars were great
4 Wagon Train A new personal story with each episode
5 Cheyenne, Maverick, Bronco, Have Gun Will Travel and all the rest

Rawhide featured mostly outdoor action, including lots of cattle, even stampedes. Back then, most of the westerns would put a comedic episode in every so often, and I loved them the best.

With advanced age and maturity, (three years on) I'm changing my list.
Besides, I've recently gotten hooked on "The Virginian", which for some reason I never watched when it was originally aired. It may have been too mature for me then.

1 The Virginian
2 Gunsmoke
3 Rawhide
4 Wagon Train
5 Bonanza

and then the others.
I always looked forward to Have Gun Will Travel during it's run, and I'd also like to give a speical mention to "The Rebel", with a young, handsome, and enigmatic Nick Adams.

CIMARRON STRIP is my favorite hands down. The BEST, and NOBODY sits a horse like Stuart Whitman!!

Have Gun, Will Travel - Paladin is one of my all time favorite tv characters
Cheyenne
Maverick
The Big Valley
The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. (if this one counts)

"Oh Mother, Godfrey loves me - he put me in the shower!!" - Irene Bullock

Cheyenne
Gunsmoke
Maverick
Rawhide

So many to choose from, but the standouts are (not in any particular order):

Rawhide
Gunsmoke
Bonanza
Cheyenne
The Rifleman
The Wild, Wild West
Hell On Wheels
The Young Riders

reply

The Dakotas
Rawhide
The Westerner (created by Sam Peckinpah)
The Rifleman (Sam Peckinpah also had a hand here)
Cimarron Strip

I'm from Blighty, and if I had the funding I'd start a satellite station catering exclusively for old westerns, both features and TV. I guess the biggest hurdle would be the rights to some of them. If only......!!!!

In '81 I had the massive pleasure of meeting Charlie Bronson on a film set in LA. RIP, Charlie. You were truly one of the greats and a damned underrated actor.

My faves are the same as charliethomas1951 (not surprising; we were born the same year) but in this order:

Maverick - loved James Garner; thought he was way cool
Wagon Train - liked Ward Bond and Robert Horton
Rawhide - liked Clint Eastwood
Cheyenne - liked Clint Walker
The Lone Ranger - was it on every afternoon? I know I watched it a lot

Also liked

Have Gun, Will Travel
Sugarfoot
The Rifleman

For me, it's "Wild Wild West". I was too young for the classic WB westerns. We didn't have a color TV til "Bonanza" was almost done. And Matt Dillon never thrilled me, though I enjoy him now in reruns. The 60s were not chock-a-block full of westerns by the time I started watching TV. Maybe that's why I gravitated towards WWW. It was one of the few oaters I enjoyed that didn't bite the dust after only a couple seasons, like "Laredo" and "High Chapparal". I also liked that West was always facing weird villains, just like the man who inspired his character, James Bond. How could a 007 fan not watch?

PS Does "F Troop" count as a WB western?
