Didn't care for it

This series for me didn't withstand the test of time. But I love his movies.

I think that with all anthology series there are hit and miss episodes. I know I still really enjoy a lot of these.

I disagree. I think it remains one of the best anthology series ever produced. Hitch's prologues and epilogues are
usually very witty (and varied), and the writing is crisp.

As for holding up, it has far more value today than "Thriller", which has almost as many lousy offerings as the corny
and awful "One Step Beyond."

reply

Like other anthology shows from that period like "Outer Limits" and "TZ" its quality is all over the map. But when it's good, like those aforementioned anthologies, it's very, very good.

Are you disagreeing with me or the OP?

reply

Kind of both. I think AHP is mostly hit, not miss. I'm not saying there's not room for argument here, but I
think the show really produced quality TV that's really strong. I also enjoy the half-hour format.

Certainly there are episodes I personally don't care for, but I recognize are strong. Conversely, I have a few
soft spots for offerings that aren't all that good, but perhaps I just like the actor.

If you haven't seen season four's "The Last Dark Step", I highly recommend it. It stars Fay Spain and Robert
Horton, and it's decades ahead of its time (here the WOMAN is the writer, and she's a "sugar mama" to Horton).
Great twist ending, that's virtually impossible to guess.

I think I've seen every episode more than once. I really like the show, but there are episodes that don't appeal to me as much as others. That's what I like about anthologies. If an episode rubs me the wrong way or I don't like a character or an actor, next episode will be totally different. The hit and miss is really subjective to the viewer for the most part.

reply

The types of episodes I tend to dislike are those that are so obviously constructed FOR a guest star. For
instance, I don't care for Art Carney (except for "The Honeymooners"), and he's in an episode that's just
a star turn. Same with the great Claude Rains, who, as much as I like him, stars as a priest in one. It
was directed by Hitch, but I find it boring as hell.

There's even a few where I don't get the ending, including one where a woman thinks her dress shop
is insured, then she commits arson. I simply don't get the ending.

The hour-long shows aren't nearly as strong, but that is also true of TZ.

One that I love, which seemed constructed for the guest, is The Perfect Crime. It's rather slow, but I like Vincent Price in it and it was directed by Hitchcock.

There are some I don't get as well, but for the most part I really enjoy them.

Never liked this one, but I've never been a super fan of Price.

reply

Yes, one of the best. And the later Hitchcock Hour is just as good!
