Bacall pouring milk for MacMurray....

How times have changed. Bacall pours milk for her ulcer-ridden husband MacMurray, which is one of the the worst things you can drink when you have that condition.

reply

Really? I had a ulcer at 5 years of age and it soothed my stomach - Still does today. Of course now I drink 1% rather than homogenized!

Years ago milk was a standard remedy for ulcers. Doctors were still prescribing milk as late in the '50's. Maalox only came along at the end of the '40's, and nobody had dreamed up Zantac.

reply

I always liked her shaking the remnants of the milk out the car window. Boy, does that bring back memories of 50s and 60s road trips and their ubiquitous thermoses!

reply

Oh man, in the 80s our family was all about thermoses, and sadly we still have them. Puke green and puke orange plastic colors. I refuse to drink anything out of the cracked, mirrored insides, but my parents do still take them on road trips.

reply

Oh, thermoses back in the 50s and 60s were much more attractive (or at least not off-putting!). Shiny silver with some red lines on them, very simple and not overdone. That came later. They worked well too. I always took one to school. But I haven't used one in decades.

reply

Just saw it on the big screen tonight and it didn't look like milk - looked more like carbonated water or water with alka seltzer in it, although I think that might make his ulcer worse.. Maybe it was just fake milk for the sake of the movie.

reply

Nowadays most ulcers are cured with a couple weeks of antibiotics. How times have changed.

I wish Bacall had poured it on MacMurray's head anyway.

Hah! 

That would never happen on Greyhound!
