Unintentionally funny

I love Barbara Stanwyck and adore George Sanders - but I found myself laughing at the end when there is supposed to be high drama as Sanders is chasing Stanwyck down the street and inexplicably a mob of bystanders just start chasing her with him. The kicker is when Stanwyck grabs a random man and screams, "Save me, save me!" and then chooses to climb up a construction site. It just struck me as incredibly funny.

I also like how they're chasing her as slowly as they possibly can. She's running as best as she can with what she's wearing. Everyone else is merely jogging so as to not overtake her.

reply

Exactly! That entire scene to me was more entertaining than the film as a whole.

I found myself laughing A LOT during this movie, so you're not the only one! That's not to say that I thought the story was ridiculous or something, cause on the contrary, I found it quite believable. But, like you, I just found some scenes unintentionally funny...VERY unintentionally funny!

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

I agree; I enjoyed all of the major cast but that ending was downright ludicrous. It's like a joke: how many people does it take to chase down a suicidal woman...lol Overall, I still enjoyed the film.

You've done some bad things, sweetie.

I'm rolling on the floor now reading these comments!! It was indeed funny!! And it got even funnier when Cheryl (Stanwyck) looks over the side of the building after she reaches the top, only to find the crowd below has turned into five hundred!! LOL!!!!!!!!!

Fifty years from now, people will think that American Hustle is absurd and unintentionally funny.

I enjoyed this until Sanders' character starts chasing Stanwyck's, the it got really silly for me. Sanders was not a clean-living sort in his personal life and he looks like he's about to have a stroke when he's "running". And for Stanwyck's character to bolt up the stairs at a building site and not just have the future Fireman Gus from Leave It Beaver protect her was laughable.

Anybody notice that the female police officer who was assigned to keep an eye on things/Stanwyck seemed to have simply 'disappeared from the chase ?
Or maybe I missed something ?

I liked it when Sanders fell to his death. I wonder if they made the dummy extra fake-looking for comedic effect.

The other thing I loved was how Stanwyck and Sanders kept making themselves at home in each other's apartments. Especially how at the end, Sanders comes uninvited into Stanwyck's apartment....claiming he's a good Samaritan just trying to prevent her from committing suicide....and the policewoman automatically agrees with him. And she tries to take Stanwyck into custody. Hilarious!
