Could've been great, but...

Could've been great movie, but somehow it just drops on the halfway through it. There's not enough action or drama while Curt is in the mountains with panther around, and relations between Harold, his mother and Gwen are developing too slowly. Very well presented (by Wellman) psychological side of the characters, though.

I agree that it could have been better but I would like to have seen it written in a way that Robert Mitchum and William Hopper had not died. It was good in the end that Tab Hunter finally learned to stand up for himself which is what his fiance' really wanted him to do. I see in the end that the mother finally began to show some affection to the father. Everyone was beaten down except for Robert Mitchum (who was quite a bully) and William Hopper. I would have liked to see the daughter have found a way to escape too. I guess not ever movie has a happy ending but I think this could have had more of a happy ending than it did.

Yes. I guess what happened to Mitchum and Hopper was needed for the others to realize some things.

I see where you are at.

even though i enjoyed this movie a lot, i do agree with some of the points made here. (the 2nd half is definetely kinda sloppy, and the finale is chaotic and very drastic, suddenly way too much happens in just a couple of minutes)

i think the indiam (Joe Sam) was kinda under-used. Could have had more meaningful screentime, more of a presence.

Yeah it gets too schizo with the stuff and Mitchum is forgotten about/not given enough to do for too long a time (he was excellent though in the early goings when he was actually given some dialogue). The family dynamics were only mildly interesting, even though the characters were actually pretty well drawn. The cinematography's quite outstanding though, and the feel of the thing. Gets a good 7,5/10 kinda rating from me, it does.

Yeah, cinematography was beautiful. I gave it 8 stars, but I'm a little weak on westerns, and think they are a bit underrated, especially the older ones.
