Out of so-called Copyright? Or time for a DVD?

I vaguely remember reading somewhere and a long time ago [but not quite in the orbit of Star Wars!] that the copyright on this film was supposed to have expired - hence its consequent non-appearance well after 1954. Can anyone clear up this mystery? In doing so, perhaps a DVD company might then consider taking on this absolute lost gem of a film.
