... Summertime (starring Katharine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi):

Any other suggestions?

Summertime is vastly superior. Three Coins is a fluffy, inconsequential (albeit enjoyable) film, whereas Summertime has razor-sharp direction by David Lean and a killer performance by Hepburn.

Well, Summertime is a deeply serious (and truly wonderful) film about aging, ideals, morals, love, loneliness - and Three Coins doesn't try to do any of these things! It is light and fluffy, fun and beautiful to look at.

It's not fair to bash Three Coins for failing to be an entirely different kind of film!

COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN is a captivating remake starring Loni Anderson. I saw it in the 1990s and loved it.

I didn't like this movie but I liked Roman Holiday. Now that's a good romantic comedy.

Sure is!

Another good, but pretty rare movie, is September Affair with Joan Fontaine and Joseph Cotten. It mostly takes place in Florence and on Capri island. It was made three years before the Roman Holliday, which is usually incorrectly considered to be the first major US movie filmed in Italy. The only downside to this flick is the fact, that it's made in black and white, which hardly does justice to the wonderful italian scenery.

As already commented, "Summertime" is not the frothy type of romantic fare that "Three Coins in the Fountain" is. "Rome Adventure" (1962) has the same frothy romantic feel. There's great scenery, a hit song "Al Di La," along with Suzanne Pleshette and Angie Dickenson, and the always worth watching Constance Ford. Troy Donahue was the big matinee idol back then, based mainly on his looks. Unfortunately, through his career in A movies from "A Summer Place" (1959) to "A Distant Trumpet" (1964), his acting never improved, and sometimes was excruciating to watch. 1962 Rome isn't much different from the 1954 Rome in "Three Coins..." So, if you don't focus on Troy Donahue's acting, the rest is actually very nice....
