Ruth!

When Cal lands in Georgia and recognizes Ruth, he swears they knew each other from lecturing to some graduate students and that they used to go swimming. She acts like he's completely out of his mind.

Does she genuinely not remember or is she for some reason deciding to feign forgetting? And if so, what motivation would she have for pretending not to remember him? I've never been able to figure out this part of the movie.
