MST3K Sucks!

When They added Island Earth and Forbidden Planet, that is when I stopped watching. No wonder their days were numbered after that.

So many wrong things to address in that statement. First off, MST3K does not suck. You're entitled to your opinion, and I'm sure there are others who are not fans of the show, but you can't make a comment like that and expect people not to disagree with you. Secondly, MST3K never did "Forbidden Planet." I don't know where you got that idea from. There's already at least one thread on this board discussing MST3K, and has been pointed out, the fact that they chose "This Island Earth" for "Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie" doesn't necessarily imply they thought it was bad; they just wanted a higher caliber film for their theatrical release than their usual fare, like "Manos." Lastly, while the show's days may have been "numbered" on Comedy Central after the film came out, I don't see how one had anything to do with the other. Besides, it lasted a few more seasons on the SciFi channel after that.

So much wrong about this complaint, but just so you know, one of the reasons those chose THIS ISLAND EARTH was because they thought it was best to get a decent film that audiences would enjoy, and therefore not get bored. That's apparently also the reason only 55 minutes worth of footage was actually riffed. MST3K: THE MOVIE is shorter than an average episode of the TV series.

Sorry, I think mystery science theater is tiresome. Couldn't we just watch the movie?

reply

While for some reason the show did win a Peabody Award, I agree with you. I watched it a few times and just got tired of the sophomoric chat's stepping on the lines in the film. I'd rather just watch the original film.

The first time or two, watching it with my husband and our friend, it was funny. By the third time, yeah, it got OLD....

reply

Yeah I agree. Watching anything with you, your husband and your friend would be wretched.

Let's see who takes the bait.

While I would like to say I love MST3K, the real truth is it's more of a "hit and miss" kind of show. The comments and one liners spoken during a film and its dialogue can be hilarious.

Couldn't we just watch the movie?

Yes. By watching the actual movie. That's not what MST3K is about.

Since they never did "Forbidden Planet," that's a nonsensical statement.

This Island Earth was my introduction to MST3K. Loved the movie and loved the take those guys did. (Oh jeez, there's soccer teams laying all over the place!) I still have a copy of a VHS copy.

You've now piqued my interest to find the Forbidden Planet episode.

I loved This Island Earth -- seeing it long before MST3K did their. I also loved MST3K and was excited that they were going to give This Island Earth their treatment.

I found it to be great, and always felt it was more of a homage (in parody form) than an insult.

The bottom line: Lighten up, Francis.

Love MST3K and love that movie, I have the DVD of it on that show.

To each his or her own I guess.

MST3K was a great show, but they were at their best when they stuck to the B movies. The better the movie they did, the less funny they became, imo.
