Where did this premise of giant ants come from?

Hmmm....

Disney's True Life Adventures - in particular - "Nature's Half-Acre" in 1951 - featured lots of never-before-seen macro-photography of insects, including ants.

I can just imagine being in a movie theater back then, watching Disney's movie, and thinking "I bet if ants were the same size as they are on that screen it would be really scary."
