MISTAKES

Early in the film when James Arness, the FBI agent, has his coat off in the sheriff's office--no gun or holster can be seen. Yet, a short time later, Arness is firing a snub-nose revolver at the ant in the desert.

Also, with all the firing, the weapons aren't being reloaded often enough, a typical Hollywood mistake.

He could've put the shoulder holster on before they left for the desert, or the gun was in an interior pocket.

Hi Koosh King01,

Maybe, but this, to me, would seem a little awkward and inconvenient. Being a federal agent, even with his coat off in a police station, wearing a shoulder holster shouldn't draw much attention.

Also, do you have an opinion of the the Sgt's firing of the Thompson at the giant ant? Seems like a lot of shooting without reloading. I believe those Thompson stick magazines only hold either 20 or 30 rounds. I've noticed these same kind of mistakes being made in a lot of other movies and TV programs.

If I were directing this scene, I would have had the Sgt grab a bandoleer of magazines out of the trunk of the police car along with the Thompson. In addition, I would have shown the Sgt reloading more often.

Best.

Well like I said, for whatever reason Graham didn't wear the shoulder holster in the office but put it on before they went out into the desert.

As for Peterson's Thompson, it doesn't matter, though, because it's a movie and in the movies, machine guns can fire hundreds if not thousands of rounds without ever needing to be reloaded. In any event, Peterson only fired for a few seconds before the ant dropped. Even if he emptied the magazine, the ant died, so there was no need to reload.

Hi Koosh King01,

Thanks for your post.

You're right about automatic weapons not being reloaded enough in the entertainment media but, it also seemed that in the short time that Sgt Peterson fired, it still seemed to be that he should have reloaded. A 20 rnd magazine would empty out in about 2 seconds. Also, if I were Peterson, I would have reloaded anyway, by reflex.

Best.
