Leonard Nimoy ! It *was* !!

Have just watched this flick on DVD, and there was a tiny part where the guy looked really really familiar ... Looked like Mr Spock, only about 17 years old. Checked the cast listing, and yes, it was !!

Anyone else spot it ?

....he shows up in small roles here and there throughout the 50's. I believe he played the part of a young soldier in this one.

Nimoy wasn't the only star to show up in bit roles in these types of movies. I caught "The Tarantula" a little while back and was surprised to notice Clint Eastwood playing an Air Force pilot who has a line or two.

When you watch these movies, and think about how old they are (this one is now 53 years old), it reminds you that some of our most beloved actors and actresses are getting a little long in the tooth. There were so many wonderful actors who got their starts in the 1950's and shortly became very famous, probably more then than in any decade prior to then. A great many of them are now in their 70's--or older--and I'm afraid that we will start losing them soon, and in bunches. It will be a very sobering---not to mention sad--moment for a lot of us who grew up watching these people.

Just imagine somebody's kids (or grandkids) 50 years from now sitting around the holograph watching a projection some Halloween and saying "Hey! was that really Paris Hilton in that old House of Wax movie?!"

Eastwood also has a small part in the sci-fi classic the deadly mantis which was also done by mst3k

Eastwood also appeared in one of the Black Lagoon Creature films. He was a tech with the missing mouse in his pocket. He commented once about the scene and said that is why he doesn't allow animals to be harmed in his films.

What part of GM did he play. I know he was the fighter pilot in "Tarantula" at the end of the film but I dont see no credit or uncredits for him in the Mantis film.

reply

I saw Clint eastwood in 'Rawhide' once, also 'Maverick' before that, and 'Mr Ed' playing himself -- Eastwood that is, not Mr Ed. And did you know he was from San Francisco, which is almost the same state as "Them!"? Funny how these coincidences happen. Just tonight saw Eric Fleming in 'Bonanza'. He was 6ft-4 like Eastwood, and Hoss. He died, and Hoss, but not Eastwood.

I TiVoed Them! the other week for my 9-year-old daughter to watch (she likes horror movies but, alas, was underwhelmed by this one), and last night while viewing it myself suddenly spotted the very lean Nimoy as the soldier who picks up a teletype message about the ants.

Actually, I'm being dishonest: I didn't so much spot Nimoy as discern him when he delivered his two lines to the secretary he hands the message to. The voice sounded familiar, the timbre unmistakably Nimoyesque, and even though he doesn't rate a close up when I backed up and replayed the scene it suddenly became clear it really was proto-Spock talking.

I wouldn't say he looked 17, though. Early twenties is more like it.

You will also see young Mr Nimoy on an old "Outer Limits" episode, I, Robot. He's the newspaper reporter covering the story of Adam Link, the first robot on trial for murder.

I find I'm mistaken. Looking up that IMDb link, I found that Mr Nimoy was in two "Outer Limits" episodes. (I don't recall ever seeing that other episode, couldn't tell you what it's about.)

(BTW: I found Mr Nimoy's memoir, I Am Spock to be an excellent read.)

when in the film does he appear, i never spotted him.

I've also noticed him playing a WW II soldier in the Twilight Zone episode "A Quality of Mercy", and as a bad boy (complete with Erroll Flynn mustache) in an early '50s episode of Dragnet.

Isn't the gentleman who played Superman not also in the movie? During the bit with the sailor type?

I do not know if that is George Reeves, but Nimoy appears in a lot of other stuff, like the TV series "West Point Story" from the 50's....

Also we have "Davey Crockett" (Fess Parker) in this movie as well....He played the private pilot that was locked up in the looney bin....for reporting giant flying ants...

About 59 minutes into the film, Edmund Gwenn is looking over the shoulder of a naval corpsman as he's transcribing a message from the telegraph. But, it wasn't Superman. It sure looked like George Reeves, although an older version.

Oh yeah! Another awesome movie. Thanks for the reply. But come to think of it, I'm almost certain the same line (or at least one very similar) is in Employee of the Month. I'll have to watch both these movies again now - how great is that!

I just watched it on Netflix and had to go back and find him. He is about 54 minutes into it. He says something to a woman about crazy Texans, and "TS, top secrect stuff". We laughed because he said TS, then had to explain what it stood for, but we didn't know it was him til I read this.

reply

I may have gotten his appearance in Revenge of the creature mixed up with another film.

The two Outer Limits episodes Nimoy was in are Production and Decay of Strange Particles and I, Robot. He had a small part in the first and a large part in the second.

Production and Decay is about an accident in a nuclear plant (I think, it's been awhile since I saw it) that opens a rift in the space/time continuum, allowing all sorts of strange beasties to enter our world. Nimoy played one of the employees at the plant.

"He's already attracted to her. Time and monotony will do the rest."

reply

Thank you.

"Production and Decay of Strange particles" sounds very interesting. I still haven't found it β€” but I've not given up looking. (Do you recall if it was the old series or the new one?)

I find that Mr Nimoy was in both "Outer Limits" episodes of "I, Robot".
β€’ In the old series episode he played the newspaper reporter covering the story.
β€’ In the new series episode, directed by his son, Adam Nimoy, he played the attorney defending Adam Link on the murder charge.

note: Some years ago, I found the novel by Eando Binder. The first chapter was the basis for the old series episode. Later, I learned that "Eando" was the pen-name of two brothers whose initials were "E" and "O".

Watching this right now on Netflix and noticed him, and came to confirm it here on the cast list. What a cutie! :)

Oh, WTF?! I didn't even recognize him. I even, uhm, paid attention to the guy, thinking he looked very sharp (in a non-gay way).

Very good, Louis. Short, but pointless.

By the way, he appears in the remake of "I, Robot" on the revival of "The Outer Limits". The episode was directed by Adam Nimoy, Leonard's son! Unfortunately, the copy at YouTube has sound problems.
