Is this movie good?

I saw an ad for it on the special features of "The Valley Of Gwangi" and it looked alright. Do you guys recommend it?

Absolutely -- I'm amazed you haven't seen it. It's a lot more than "all right". A well-written, well-acted, superbly directed top-notch sci-fi thriller, with an excellent cast, scary special effects and plausible story. THEM! really is considered a classic -- not because of its age, or in the way a lot of bad-but-fun movies are. It's truly a first-rate film in every way. Definitely get it. (It's also available on a two-movie DVD with THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS, made a year earlier, and another excellent sci-fi film you should see.)

It is one of the best sci-fi films ever made, and the best (also the first, IIRC) of the giant insect films. I've had it for years, first on VHS, and now on DVD. It is superb.
(BTW Hob, I ordered The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, and The Well from Amazon. I should get them pretty soon. I got them largely on the strength of your reaction to them. So here is a Republican who listens to at least one Democrat!) You take care.

Hands across the divide!!!

I love BEAST, and THE WELL as I've said is very good, though the print quality even on this Image DVD isn't great -- it seems the film was allowed to deteriorate down the years. But a striking movie, for such a low-budgeter, and an adult theme, at least.

If you like THE WELL (or even if you don't!), try ACE IN THE HOLE, if you haven't seen it. Slightly similar in its situation, but it takes off in whole different directions. Superb film from Billy Wilder. Out from Criterion just this summer, but Amazon (last I saw) had the best price, $24.96 or so.

We seem to have a "pit" mentality going on on this thread -- deep ant colonies and sewers in THEM, sewers and a well in (duh) THE WELL, a caved-in mountain shaft in ACE IN THE HOLE, crumbling ice crevasses in BEAST. Climb! Climb!

Yes, now that you mention it, we do. Have you had a chance to read the Nuremberg thread yet?

reply

I hadn't yet, but just did, and left a post as a reply to micaofboca-1. Basically a mediation effort! Hope my two cents helps.

Glad (but not surprised) you like THEM. I wonder if ants really sound like that? What are the odds?

Okay, a test: in what other, somewhat similar, flick did they re-use the sounds of the giant ants to stand in for the alleged sounds of another kind of bug?

Let me know (post an alert here or on WWE) what you think of BEAST and WELL -- but post those opinions on their respective sites so we can at least keep the threads on point sometimes!

Oh, by the way -- when's the move to OK? You realize, of course, that that will compel you to purchase yet another DVD, in honor of your new state. How are you on musicals???

I like 'Them'.

Very much and highly recommended.

It certainky deserves to be seen but it shows really its age. I fell asleep twice seeing it... Not to say it is bad. It's just really outdated.

I just had (Oct 2010) the good fortune to see this movie for only my third time on the big screen. (My first was in the 1956-57 school year; second was in early or middle 1980s.) More than ever, I appreciate how well made it is. The early scenes set in the New Mexico desert are beautiful, and the action scenes are entertaining and appropriately short. (I don't go to action movies any more. I'm bored by those drawn-out high-tech FX scenes that are common nowadays.) The dialogue is loaded with funny lines. In particular, in the early scenes in New Mexico, the dialogue reminded me of Plan 9 From Outer Space by Ed Wood, which I mean as a compliment. Great comic touch.
