Dick Powell was a cutie

I thought he was really attractive in this movie. His smile is so warming. I can see why Susan fell in love with him

He looks like an older Gary Oldman-as-Stansfield.

He may have been a cutie, but I could never believe that he was supposed to be only 35 years old! Even that's a big age gap, but he looked more like late 40s - a bit too creepy for me!

Interesting thread. I have to say I didn't find him attractive at all either. On the contrary. He says in the movie that he's 35. In reality he was 50, but looks more like 55. And a very stodgy 55 on top of that.

It never bothered me that the girl fell in love with an older man, I just couldn't see her fall in love with this man.

That being said, I liked the movie and I always liked Debbie Reynolds. She's wonderful here. I also usually like Dick Powell. He was great in Murder, My Sweet.

I agree, Dick Powell back in the 1930's and even the 40's was quite handsome. In the 30's, he had a baby face and in 1934, when he was 30, he looked about 21 years old. The movie is cute, but I just feel as though Dick Powell was miscasted. They could have cast Peter Lawford, Farley Granger, William Holden, Jack Lemmon or even Robert Walker (who would have been excellent) for the role of the playwright. All of these men were handsome and had great comic timing.

Although a bit old for Debbie, Powell was sexy as hell! they don't make them like him any more.

I thought he looked old and awful.

Agreed. If someone else had that role I may have wanted to watch the film again.
