Top 20 Movies List

Okey, Someone started doing this on the 'Amadeus' board and I never thought I go for it but once I started I couldn't stop and since 'La Strada' tops my list I thought it belonged here.....Here's my list and it's not really in order except for the first 5 :
LaStrada ( my first Fellini and my fav )
Amadeus ( can never get enough of this film )
Hannah and Her Sisters ( one of Woody's best )
Rushmore ( the best film of the 90's )
2001: A Space Odessey ( never seen anything like it, and never will again )
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory ( saw this when I was 9 and it stuck with me like an Everlasting Gobstopper, sorry.... )
Rocky Horror Picture Show ( the ultimate midnight movie is also a great camp classic )
The Graduate ( a very special movie )
Midnight Cowboy
Much Ado About Nothing ( 1993's version by Kenneth B )
Broadway Danny Rose ( yes, as good as Woody gets )
Gone With The Wind ( yeah, I think this is my favorite out of the "big Hollywood classics" it still hold up )
My Fair Lady ( best musical ever )
The Kids are Alright ( my favorite Rock pic )
The Producers ( funniest movie of all time )
E.T. ( Speilberg's best )
Amacord ( a year in the life in 1930's Italy....like a Vivaldi concerto for lute, but on film )
Withnail and I ( very cool cult film )
The Wizard of Oz ( the perfect Hollywood studio movie )
Monty Python and the Holy Grail ( The 2nd funniest movie of all time )

Okey, anybody else?

Great list! and cool new Id. I really like Brazil a lot ...lot's of Fellini on that list. You have to see Night of Cabiria. Have you ever seen Stardust Memories by Woody Allen? It's his 8 1/2...also Sweet and Lowdown is very much like La Strada. He's a big Fellini fan as well. Also you might want to see Amacord...

reply

Gelsomina's list is impressive - I admire many of the same movies.
(& I like her new id.)

From Studio Ghibli, I would add:
My Neighbor Totoro
Grave of the Fireflies

Along with The Seven Samurai, I would add "Chushingura".

Along with Brazil, I would add "12 Monkeys".

Along with La Strada, I would add "Juliet of the Spirits".

No offence, but I can't imagine that 50 years from now many people will care about the LotR trilogy. They may be OK, but a Real Great Film has to stand the test of time.

I never make mistakes. Once I thought I did, but I was wrong.

reply

Your claim doesn't really have any basis. Yes, test of time, blah blah, but time hasn't been tested, and your hypothesis is just a blind shot in the dark.

I'm not a LoTR fanboy or anything, but I wouldn't be surprised if they held up fairly well. The books did, and the movies are a lot more accessible than the books (in terms of audience's interested in reading vs watching).

Anyway. I also think that your comment has no place in this thread.

reply

I highly doubt that, regardless of its quality.

reply

I can't believe you're being hassled just because you put the LOTR movies on your list! Not because I think they're so great (I don't. They are entertaining, but I wouldn't put them anywhere near a Top movies list), but because so much of your list is made up of really great movies!

Blade Runner! La strada! 8 1/2! Roma! Throne of Blood! The Seven Samurai! Brazil! Spirited Away!

La strada, Blade Runner and Seven Samurai are all in my Top Twenty, easy!

But everybody should have a few slightly-off choices in their Top Twenty or else these lists would all look the same. (I got King Kong vs. Godzilla.)

Janet! Donkeys!

Why be ashamed of liking a movie like Toy Story? It's well-written and well-made. And you can't argue about taste, right?

1. Godfather part 2 (Coppola) - For the engaging nature, timelessness, quality and story
1. It's a Wonderful Life (Capra) - For its tenderness, truth and ode to the human spirit. Never feel more alive and happy to be alive than after watching this film.
4. Raging Bull (Scorcese) - For editing perfection, the character study and the story
5. Los Olvidados (Bunuel) - I can't explain this one, I felt as though i was growing up with these tough kids as i watched it. Honest, at times heartbreaking, other times cool.
6. The Graduate (Nichols) - For its hilarity and for the sharp script
6. Some Like it Hot (Wilder) - For it's hilarity. For the sharp script, the comedy never gets old.

13.The Kid (Chaplin) - The most touching story of all. Plus the score is wonderful.
13.La Strada (Fellini) - this moved me, but it's only this low because it's a recent watch. Perhaps in the future it would be higher up.
