Gelsomina, a female Harpo Marx.

Who talks, that is. Anyone agree?

I am surprised that no one has come on here to attack you for posting that. I agree with you. I think it was intentional. In an early scene, Zampano puts different hats on her, and leaves her with a Harpo hat. The Marx brothers were very popular at that time, and they must have wanted people to make that connection. It may have been to emphasize her awkwardness and simplicity, since Harpo was the silent simple minded brother.

I think Masina would have made a truly brilliant silent movie star, she had such an expressive face and a wonderful way of moving her whole body to suit/create a mood without the need for any dialogue. Fellini clearly appreciated and made full use of this talent.
One critic I read recently (forget which) said Masina was 'Chaplinesque' in NIGHTS OF CABIRIA, which is spot on. The trouble is he meant it as a critisism!
I thought that was pretty mean. She was outstandingly good in that movie.

I agree fully and there is nothing more that I can add...

that was the intent of that character i think. shes a comedic clown character on the outside but also a religious revelation to Zampano to being him in touch with his humanity.

Can this really be the end..to be stuck inside of mobile
with the Memphis blues again.

Exactly my thought. Harpo goes to prison, falls in love with a jocker, and gets an early albeit undesired release.
