I'm thirty minutes into this thing. w...t.....f?

The acting is ranging from awful to absolutely god awful.
People are staring at rather mundane items in such a bug-eyed and panicked way that it's painful to watch.
And it's not just one actor. It's pretty much across the board.
THIS THING is considered a classic? K......

Go and watch something else, with your popcorn.

This movie is one of my favorite movies ever, and I watch it with my popcorn. I guess I'm doing something wrong :)

I kind of have to agree. I am a big movie fan and I have patience for films of a different era, but it is hard to get over the way over the top acting by most (not all, the Samurai leader was probably the best actor) and fight scenes where nobody hits each other and there is no blood, and the long drawn out reaction shots. I guess I have been spoiled by modern movies like Kill Bill and the like.

It is interesting to watch once you realize that this is the model for a lot of action movies that came afterwards, i.e. assembling a rag tag crew to fight impossible odds, the wise leader, the gung ho out of control type, the stoic super skilled killer, the young apprentice.

Also, it is interesting to see where Lucas got his idea for the scene wipes in Star Wars!

Have you seen the films of Masaki Kobayashi and Hideo Gosha? They also made samurai classics, but with great fight choreographies and without overacting. Also, if non-action samurai films are your thing, Kenji Mizoguchi's films are highly recommended.
