Probably Values Dissonance

I get the whole idea was that Corby couldn't just come to this town, learn nothing about them, and try to fix their lives by buying them things without really understanding. And inflation is a genuine thing that would happen.

But I just found it really gross that when she bought the vet a new car and he decided to sell the car and go out to California the way he always wanted to everyone acted like he was being horrible and literally tied him up to try and shame him into staying. Who cared what he wanted? He was born in the country, why should he ever want to leave? He's the only vet in 100 miles (that can't possibly be literally true) so therefore how dare he leave. He's pretty old, is he never allowed to retire, either?

It would put them all in a hard place if he did leave without having another vet around and the town doctor is not qualified to be a vet but damn did the locals come off as selfish and terrible. They should try to have a back-up vet plan for when this poor guy doesn't live forever and work until he dies anyway and get a local who wants to stay in town trained up as a vet, not try to ruin this poor guy's dream because they want him to be at their beck and call.

They literally held him hostage. What is wrong with these people?

They asked him to delay his trip for two weeks or until they could get a replacement vet, which he was unwilling to do for some odd reason, making the vet look like the selfish one.
