10 Years of Planning for that?

So when they were children that first arrived as slaves to the Bailiff, the Bailiff's son told them that they were too young to survive if they tried escaping and recommended that they hold out until they were older.

Ten years pass and they are still living as slaves and certainly not enjoying it.

After all that time, the best plan they came up with to escape was a random impromptu decision to run away when they were in the woods with guards not too far away, and for the sister to commit suicide to give her brother a better head start? I would hope that I would come up with a smarter plan than that if I had ten years to think about it.

1.The movie clearly shows that the brother, for awhile, started becoming a loyal slave for Sansho because it was the easiest path. In fact the first thing we see from him in the time skip is branding an old man's skull So obviously he was NOT planning an escape for that decade.

2. They're SLAVES. They're being worked, constantly. How much energy do you think they had to devote to coming up with a plan? I can't even imagine what a slave felt like at the end of any given day. I seriously doubt they were having in depth strategy sessions.

3.The escape was purely spur of the moment. They saw a chance and they took it. So why would there be a plan? Were you honestly expecting some elaborate plan to be formulated at the spur of the moment?

4.What WERE you expecting as far as plans by a pair of siblings enslaved as children with about average intelligence? Were you expecting some elaborate set up involving a map, a bunch of traps and taking out guards? The only way they were going to get out was for an opportunity to come along.
