Criterion quality

I have heard that the quality of the Criterion DVD is horrible. I was just wondering how bad it really is since I'm planning on getting this soon.

Ive heard various things. The largest complaint Ive heard is that the whole film is too dark. Its hard to see in many scenes, the subtitles are not easily read. The print overall seems to be of poor quality (the one Criterion is using anyhow). There was mention of some issues with the color also, but not as frequent.

I have them and they seem fairly good. The only real problem is that due to age there are some bits missing not a big deal just occasionally there while be a flash of black. Other than that they are pretty good and probably the best that while ever be available for the film.

I finally made the jump and just received the copy from the net. It shows it is from the first Criterion to be out. The quality is just fine. Nothing compare to todays production. But noting anoying on my part, I think it's mostly the sound that was or neede to be work at. Ok now let's get the No. 2 in the DVD.

Go ahead anyway the price went down a bit, for anyone hesitating. The story is worth it.

I have just finished watching the first two, and I really thought they were of decent quality, considering the age. Here is a link to dvdbeaver where you can see some screen shots of the various releases.

Wow, it is quite clear the work that have been done on the Criterion copies. Now, the question; is it worth the extra bucks? I say yes.

Can beat it, a picture is worth a million words. great link. thx.

I don't think I'll be buying the UK release any time soon! I'll go for the Criterion trilogy set. Extra 10 pounds but definately worth it.

I thought that the lighting for a lot of the scenes was terrible, but I think it has more to do with the production than the print.

The quality of the first 2 movies was pretty good but the 3rd is in the worst shape, it has a lot of scratches on it and the picture quality isn't as detailed as the other films. If you watch the original trailers for the films it gives you a better idea of what the original quality was like.

I wouldn't say the quality was horrible, but it's not great. The movie seems a little dark at times and it skips a lot, like it's missing frames. The subtitles aren't great either. Misspelled words and wrong words, for instance: "Somebody just ran passed us!" This the second Criterion release I've been kind of disappointed in, the other one being "Yojimbo."

The lighting isn't bad -- it's just how they used to do night scenes. They would film at day but intentionally darken the film to make it seem like it was night. The old westerns did it all the time too. It's kind of lame because you are seeing cloudy skies and shadows on the ground, but you're supposed to think it's night just because it's dark and hard to see.

Agreed, they shot "day for night" in all three movies but it's not too bad or too dark. Day for Night is still used, they just CGI and desaturate the colors now to look more like night. The subtitles were big and white on the dvds I saw, perhaps the translation was odd a curious mix of slang and formality.
