Trees?

If you remember, there was a massive tree in this film. It was in the main village, the one the priest hung Mifune's character from. The diameter had to have been well over 10 feet, and it dwarfed everyone that stood next to it.

From all the Japanese films I've seen (and I've seen my share), I've never before seen a tree this large. Does anyone know what kind it was?

Great film, by the way. ;)

Now let the pebble go. There goes Australia! See how stupid your theory is? - Gurtinator

What kind of a question is this?????

reply

One that seeks an answer - do you know of any other?

An art film can trust its audience to follow along to the necessary conclusion.

reply

You've got way too much time on your hands if your asking questions like that.

reply

I'm seeking information, and I have too much time on my hands?

What does that say of you when you reply for no reason whatsoever?

I used to be sceptic, but not anymore, because now I am positive that I'm getting screwed.

reply

interesting question, sorry, i have no answer though (i too enjoyed this movie, thank god for IFC at 5 AM)

FNW Rocks!

Has anyone see the Criterion Editions of these films? I was thinking of buying them but I heard that the picture is so dark that it detracts seriously from the film. Is this true?

reply

In some scenes the picture is pretty dark but you can still see what's going on. I don't think it detracted from the movie.

reply

i just have to say, I can't believe people are complaining of this question.

anyway, sorry i have no idea about that tree.

reply

In the book, it's called a cryptomeria tree.

I have no idea why that guy was making such a big deal about you asking this question...

reply

[deleted]

Yep. In the book it's a cryptomeria tree.

I've got to return some videotapes...

reply

It looks like a type of Cedar....

reply

That's a great question. I just watched the movie and thought, damn that's a big tree. Like Sequoia big. Dont know what kind it could be though.

reply

I too shared your curiosity about this tree. I thought perhaps it was a Japanese version of a California giant cedar, or Sequoia. But apparently it is a Cryptomeria, also known in Japan as a Sugi tree. It just so happens that this type of tree is the national tree of Japan, and they were (and I suppose, still are) routinely planted near temples and shrines. In the film, that's exactly where this tree is planted: in the courtyard of the nearby temple.
