That big tree

That big tree, from which they hang the captured Musashi Miyamoto, is a Cryptomeria, also known in Japan as a Sugi tree. It just so happens that this type of tree is the national tree of Japan, and they were (and I suppose, still are) routinely planted near temples and shrines. In the film, that's exactly where this tree is planted: in the courtyard of the nearby temple.
