It didn't help that Biberman was involved

I think this film would have been far more easy to make if Biberman was not associated with this film. Along with devoted communists, Paul Jarrico and Will Geer and others, this film was a target for those opposed to communist activists.

The film should have been made by those cleared of such an incumberance.

You are correct!

And furthermore, if they just changed the actors to include John Wayne and Ronald Reagan and Marilyn Monroe and made the Mexican workers white and made the mine owners the heroes, it would have been even EASIER to make !! The struggle (and the formation of the auto workers union, steel workers union, electrical workers union, mine workers union, major teachers unions, leather workers, meat cutters and many other unions) was greatly aided and often initiated by people who believed in a variation of Marxism-communism. That's a real part of US history. If you don't want to accept that fact, it won't make that fact go away. The reality is that nobody else would have made that movie at that time. So it would not have been "far more easy to make" because it would not have been made at all!

Why does it matter if the director was communist?
